"The Paupers of Granby"
Sunday, November 10
2:00 - 3:00pm
Carol Laun, Archivist of the Salmon Brook Historical Society, will discuss how Granby handled the problem of paupers through the years, sometimes in ways that are
rather shocking to us today.
In New England, the problem of what to do with paupers created a conflict between the Congregational conscience and public parsimony. The solution, by law, made every town responsible for its own poor. How the town met that responsibility was left to the discretion of the Selectmen. Laun's talk will also include information about the Poor Farm Cemetery on Silver Street.
Pre-registration is suggested for this event. The program is free and open to the public, and kindly sponsored by the Friends of Granby Public Library.
